Once you’ve listed all the services on your website, the next step is to identify which ones collect personal data; such as IP addresses, browsing behavior, or login information. These cookies must be subject to user consent in compliance with applicable data protection regulations.

The difference between functional and other cookies

Legally, only non-functional cookies ; those used for tracking, analytics, or advertising, are subject to consent requirements. These types of cookies collect personal data and must only be loaded after the user has given their explicit permission, in accordance with data protection laws.

However, Axeptio offers additional flexibility by allowing you to list functional or essential cookies as well, those that do not collect personal data but are necessary for your website to work properly (such as language selection or display preferences).

These cookies do not require prior consent, but you can still choose to display them on a dedicated information screen. This helps you adopt an even more transparent approach with your users by giving them a full overview of all the trackers on your site.

Shake helps identify services that require consent
Our Shake scanner can help you easily determine which services on your site require user consent. For services listed in our database, the PDF report indicates whether consent is required.

This gives you a solid starting point to identify services that need to be subject to consent. However, keep in mind that Shake is not exhaustive and some services might not be listed or may be outdated.

If in doubt, contact the service provider

If you're still unsure about a particular service after using Shake (or whether it collects personal data) it's important to get clarification. Here's how:

  • Reach out to the service's support team to request detailed information about their data collection practices.

  • Check the service's documentation to see whether personal data is collected and for what purposes.
