What is the Global Privacy Control (GPC)?

The Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a signal sent by a user’s browser or operating system to automatically communicate their privacy preferences.

When GPC is enabled (via a browser setting, extension, or system configuration), the user expresses their wish to opt out of certain uses of their personal data, in particular the sale or sharing of personal information, without having to manually interact with a cookie banner.

This signal is recognized by certain regulations, including the CCPA / CPRA in California, which require it to be treated as a valid opt-out request.

Why is GPC important?

GPC helps you to:

  • Automatically respect the user’s privacy choice

  • Reduce friction related to cookie banner interactions

  • Meet regulatory requirements, especially under the CCPA

  • Strengthen user trust by applying their choice as soon as they arrive on your site

How does GPC work with Axeptio?

Axeptio automatically detects the presence of a GPC signal sent by the user’s browser.

When the option is enabled in your Axeptio interface:

  • The GPC signal overrides the banner behaviour

  • The user’s choice is applied as soon as the page loads

  • Cookies and trackers concerned by the opt-out are not deposited

  • The consent status is stored in accordance with the detected signal

👉 The user does not need to interact with the banner for their choice to be respected.

Enabling GPC in Axeptio

You can enable GPC directly from your Axeptio interface:

  1. Go to the right configuration

  2. Open the Global Privacy Control (GPC) section

  3. Enable GPC signal captation

Once activated, Axeptio will automatically apply the GPC signal whenever it is detected.

⚠️ Important: when GPC is enabled, it may override your banner configuration. For example, even if your banner waits for the user’s choice, the GPC signal will be applied first.
