Set up GPC

Written by Alexandre Dias Da Silva

Axeptio now offers Global Privacy Control!

This option is only available for CCPA configurations

What is Global Privacy Control (GPC)?

The Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a signal transmitted by the user's browser or system to automatically indicate their privacy preferences.

In practice, when a user enables GPC (via a browser, extension, or system setting), they express their intention to refuse certain uses of their personal data, in particular the sale or sharing of data, without having to manually interact with a cookie banner.

This mechanism is notably recognized by certain regulations, such as the CCPA / CPRA in California, which requires treating this signal as a valid opt-out request.

Why is GPC important?

GPC makes it possible to:

  • Automatically respect the user's privacy choice

  • Reduce friction associated with displaying and interacting with banners

  • Comply with regulatory requirements, particularly in the United States (CCPA)

  • Build user trust by showing that their choice is respected upon arrival on the site

How does GPC work with Axeptio?

Axeptio automatically detects the presence of a GPC signal sent by the user's browser.

When the option is enabled in your Axeptio interface:

  • The GPC signal overrides the banner behavior

  • The user's choice is applied as soon as the page loads

  • Cookies and trackers subject to the opt-out are not deposited

  • Consent (or refusal) is recorded in accordance with the signal received

👉 The user therefore does not need to interact with the banner for their choice to be respected.

Enabling GPC in Axeptio

GPC activation is done from your Axeptio interface:

  1. Go to the configuration in question

  2. Access the Global Privacy Control (GPC) section

  3. Enable the Enable GPC signal captation option

Once enabled, this option allows Axeptio to automatically process the GPC signal when it is detected.

Here is an overview of the message when the GPC signal is triggered:

⚠️ Important: when GPC is active, it may override the configured banner behavior (for example, even if the banner is waiting for the user's choice, the GPC signal will be applied as a priority).
